Weekday Devotionals - Samantha

What do you want but you are doing nothing about?

“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?” (Luke 9:25, NIV).

Pastor Pete shared a lot of Insite this past Sunday about spiritual growth and I took a lot of notes but the question I opened with was what my spirit pushed to the very front of the line. It was like everything else I typed out was in a font size 8 and these words were in a font size 36. As this question burned through my thoughts, I referred back to another note I made, a stat from a survey referance. In 2021 70% of people in the survey (proudly, emphasis mine) called themselves Christians but only 9% were actually working toward being more like Christ.

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24, NIV).

My goal is to be as much like Jesus as a human-being can be and that means that I need to constantly be working on being less like me. Let’s face it, when I am not aiming to be like Jesus (compassionate, forgiving, loving, prayerful, patient, obedient, humble, servant), then I’m being more like me (selfish, forgetful, arrogant, indecisive, dramatic, impatient, ect.) The me list might just have no end, and isnt that the irony, Jesus was such an amazing man when He walked this earth and His list of what we can be is so much smaller. So why is it so hard?

My thought lines up with that survey, we love the thought of Jesus and what He stands for but, if I may be bold, its A LOT of hard work!

We have to commit.

We have to be obedient.

We have to put ourselves and our creature comforts to the side, over and over….and over again.

Pastor listed many ways we can do something about what we want, and if we are proclaiming to be Christians, then we are proclaiming we want to be Christ like.
