Putting on the Armor of God by Marissa Lee
Do you ever have a day you just can’t seem to kick an attitude that has come over you?
Wow, sometimes I feel it’s a fight to kick those negative feelings out of my mind.
The devil loves to creep into those weak moments during our day where maybe someone just hit that last nerve. Maybe that co-worker’s attitude started rubbing off on you. Maybe your child said Mom or Dad one too many times. Whatever your tipping point has been, it gives those negative attitudes an opportunity to sneak into our mind and fill it with ugly thoughts.
I was talking to my husband just this past weekend about how the Bible is a living word. He pointed out a verse that I have read so many times but it didn’t resonate with me until that moment. Hebrews 4:12 says: “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
God literally gave us power, through his word, to fight the spiritual and mental battle of our heart and mind! When I read this, it gave me a renewed feeling on what reading the Bible everyday does for us. I realized as I have been reading that I am actually equipping myself with God’s armor every day and using it as a shield for those weak moments.
When you flip your mindset and start viewing the word of God as “living and active”, it changes how you receive the knowledge you are gaining from reading the Bible. God has given each of us the ability to prepare for what this world is actively throwing at us.
So we know now that the Bible is living and active... how can we incorporate that into our daily lives? How do we prepare for those weak moments?
One thing can be as simple as memorization. Yes! I said SIMPLE. When it comes to memorizing scripture, it doesn’t mean you have to memorize a verse every single day. Pick a verse that resonates with you. Write it physically and place it where you will see it daily. Practice saying it. Have someone memorize it with you! Memorizing scripture is only going to give you more “ammo” to use in battle when the fight for our mindset comes. I have started challenging myself to memorize verses weekly to have on standby for those times during my day that catch me off guard. I might need to speak the power of the word into that moment immediately and having my weapon ready to use is so powerful.
Another thing you can do is to create a positive support group. I have a group of friends that share daily the wins and challenges we all face and how we overcome them, or even struggle with them and ask for advice. Surround yourself with people that uplift you and are likeminded. Needing people to lean on doesn’t show weakness, it shows you have the wisdom to ask for guidance and help while also helping others.
As a church we have been reading the Bible in one year together. This can be a challenging task that can seem a little daunting. But the blessings that come from reading the word everyday are countless.
I CHALLENGE YOU!!
1.Read your Bible every day. Either listen to it audibly or physically read. The One Year Bible Thrive is currently going through is available on our Thrive App. As a church we have been reading the Bible in one year together.
2.Memorize a verse! During your daily readings, find a verse that holds meaning for you, and take a week to memorize it. See what God will do when you have his living word readily available to use during your day.
3.Create a support group! This can be a small group you are already in or maybe a friend that you can count on to share your daily struggles and wins with.
I can’t wait for you to see how God moves through you daily life when you spend time in his word daily and put on the armor of his word on every day!
