Weekday Devotionals

Devo by Pastor Aaron Green

Verse: "...Choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your parents served, or the gods of the land in which you live, but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." Joshua 24:15 (paraphrased)

Thought: God is not a push-over. He is indeed patient with us. I've heard it said that God has endless patience with those who are honestly attempting to follow Him; like someone 'feeling around a dark room' trying to find the light-switch, He's fine waiting on that person. However, He does ask you to decide what you are going to do. Are you going to follow Him? Then do that, and do not remain indifferent. It's fine if you do not follow Him perfectly, or 'get it all right', but make the decision to do it or not. Perhaps you reading this devotional is you making that decision to follow Him, and you're figuring out what that looks like. You're off to a great start! Keep going! Choosing to follow Him means allowing that pursuit to dictate your time, not your time to dictate that pursuit. As Jesus is asking people to follow Him, all sorts of excuses come out of their mouths... "First let me go bury my father..." Jesus responds with, "Let the dead bury their own dead, you come follow me." (Luke 9:60) Now, it should be noted that the request to bury his father was not an immediate concern. In other words, it would be like a college student, with a perfectly healthy father saying, after my father dies I'll come follow you. Well, that may be a while. Jesus is asking Him to make that decision now. One might be tempted to say, I'll follow you Jesus, but where are we going? What do I need? Maybe we even have our own, "I will, but first let me..." excuses. Jesus is echoing the same sentiment we saw in Joshua. Choose this day whom you will serve, and do it.

Application/Challenge: What is your response to Jesus' call? What does it look like to follow Him? How has your life been different since choosing to follow Jesus?
