Weekday Devotionals
Thrive Devotional February 2, 2022 By Aaron Green
VERSE:
14 “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:14-15 (ESV)
Thought:
There is always a call to action in the Christian life; a decision that needs to made and stuck with. We read in Revelation that God even tells a church, “You’re neither hot nor cold, I WISH you were hot or cold, but because you are neither I will spit you out of my mouth.” (Rev. 3:14-15) It appears throughout the Scriptures God will call His people to say yes or to say no, but He does not want them to remain indifferent. It seems God would rather you say no than remain undecided. Since we began the Rooted initiative at the beginning of the year, Pastor Pete has invited God to once again lay this question on our hearts and minds. The time to make a decision is upon us. Challenges never seem to come at an opportune time. If you’re like me, there is all sorts of reasons this is not a ‘great time’ for me to take on this challenge, but regardless of the excuses I have, I still picture Jesus holding out His hand, gently looking into my eyes, and once again stating, “Follow me.” If you’re answer is yes, then let your yes be yes, and begin to take the next step forward. If your answer is no, I believe God will allow you to make that decision, but I also believe He will continue to come around, hold out His hand, and repeat, “Follow me.” The adventure is in the, ‘yes’. The Promised Land is in the ‘yes’. The abundant; full life that Jesus offers, the one that makes you thirst no more is in the ‘yes’. It’s scary, it’s uncertain, it’s mysterious, but God is there. Choose this day whom you will serve. Will we serve the god (lower case ‘g’) of comfort and convenience; satisfied only with the shallow end and our floaties on? Or, will we take a dive into the great unknown; knowing that there is fulfillment in the deep well of Christ and His call? I invite you to take the dive with me. Many of us are taking the plunge together; you will not be alone.
Application/Challenge:
Take some time this week to ask God what He is asking you to do with this Rooted initiative a few times this week (before Sunday). Take ten minutes to be still and listen for His guidance. Be open to the challenge He may be offering, and decide in your heart what your answer will be.
