Contemporary Corinthians

1 Corinthians 12:12,14 – Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ…… Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

It never ceases to amaze me the way God works. Most Sundays, you will find me at the front door greeting people as they come into worship. The Dream Team was a great way for a transplant to meet people and to feel as part of the church. This past Sunday I looked up and there were some friends of mine from TN coming in the door. They have attended a few other times with me, but this was such a surprise—what a blessing!

You see, where the God-wink comes in, these friends are also missing body parts. Laurie was born without a complete left arm and Jack is missing his leg below the knee. No matter where we go, we usually have a chance to educate. A small boy ran up to Laurie and was SO interested in her prosthetic arm. She patiently explained how it works to him and his brother.

In my life, while attending churches no matter where I land, I have always loved being in a diverse gathering of believers. As Pastor Pete talked about his wife and her journey with churches speaking in tongues (yes-no-?), different is not all bad, as long as the church is based on Scripture. The gifts God gives us are how we make a complete world. God will give us all we need to feel complete and be a developed disciple no matter what life has thrown at you. And if you are thinking, “I don’t know what my gift is.” Just think about what you do, that gives you the most joy. It doesn’t have to be a huge thing—sometimes it is just the ability to listen, sending cards, explaining your awesome arm, or being available to pray with a friend. When you are doing God’s work and smiling, that is a spiritual gift given to you and your heart.

But be very careful that you don’t do these things to be seen or admired. That is not God’s work. 1 Corinthians 12:1 says, “Now, brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this.” Using your gifts when most of the time no one knows about it, that is what gives you a warm feeling in your soul. A developed disciple will do whatever is necessary to serve others. It is what “being like Jesus” means—as a developed disciple, we don’t need a role, position, or title to complete us.

So next time you think you are not getting the recognition or being passed over with what you think you deserve, that is not what following Jesus is about. The only one who needs to know what you are doing and the only one who truly sees you and your heart is Jesus. And that is all that matters.

Are you at peace with who God says you are?

John 6-28-29-- Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?’ Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
