A New Way

Scripture: Hebrews 6:13-20, 7:22-28, 8:10-13

Have you ever caught yourself treating your relationship with God like a checklist?

Read your Bible. Pray. Be kind. Don't do this. Don't do that.

While those are all good things, they were never meant to be the foundation of our faith.

As we continue throug Hebrews this week, I was reminded of something that completely changes the way we approach God. Before Jesus, access to God's presence was limited. Under the Old Covenant, the tabernacle contained the Most Holy Place, separated by a thick curtain. Only the high priest could enter beyond that veil, and only at specific times, to offer sacrifices for the sins of the people.

Then Jesus came.

When He died on the cross, that curtain was torn from top to bottom. What had once separated sinful people from a holy God was removed forever. Jesus became our perfect and eternal High Priest. He offered Himself once and for all, ending the sacrificial system forever. Past sins. Present sins. Future sins. His sacrifice was enough.

That truth brings such incredible freedom.

Hebrews also reminds us that under God's new covenant, He doesn't simply hand us another list of rules. He writes His law on our hearts. He gives us His Holy Spirit, who reminds us of Christ's words, awakens our conscience, shapes our motives, and gently leads us toward obedience.

That changes everything.

If our hearts have never been transformed, obeying God will often feel exhausting, restrictive, and uncomfortable. But when the Holy Spirit is at work within us, something beautiful begins to happen. We don't simply obey because we have to. We begin to obey because our hearts are changing. Our desires begin to align with His. Serving God becomes less about obligation and more about joy.

I've experienced this personally.

Whenever I drift into trying to "get it right" simply by following a list of rules, life becomes heavy. I strive harder, yet somehow feel farther from God. But when I return to simply spending time with Him through prayer, journaling, worship, studying His Word, and genuine fellowship with other believers, everything changes. My obedience doesn't become perfect, but it becomes the natural overflow of a growing relationship.

The Law was never designed to save people. It revealed their sin and pointed them toward the Savior who was coming.

Jesus is that Savior.

There is nothing I can add to what He accomplished on the cross. I cannot make my salvation more secure by working harder, and I cannot make God love me more than He already does. Christ has already done everything necessary.

The invitation isn't to become better at following rules.

The invitation is to know Jesus more deeply.

Because obedience grows from understanding who He is, trusting what He has done, and honoring Him with a heart that has been made new.

Prayer

Father, thank You for making a way for me to come directly to You through Jesus Christ. Thank You that I don't have to earn Your love or strive to secure my salvation. Jesus has already done everything that was needed. Continue to write Your truth on my heart. Let Your Holy Spirit shape my thoughts, my desires, and my actions so that my obedience flows from love rather than obligation. Draw me closer to You each day, and help me find joy in walking with You.
