Finding the Shepherd in the Everyday

"The Lord is my Shepherd [to feed, to guide and to shield me], I shall not want. He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still and quiet waters. He refreshes and restores my soul..."
Psalm 23:1–3 AMP

One question from Sunday's message has stayed with me all week:
"Can we achieve deep relationship in this modern-day world?"
As I thought about that question, my mind kept going back to the Israelites in the wilderness. God had rescued them from slavery, provided food from heaven, guided them by a pillar of cloud during the day and fire at night, and faithfully met their needs every step of the way. Yet so often, they focused on what they lacked instead of what God was providing. They became so consumed with their circumstances that they stopped recognizing God's presence in their everyday lives.

I wonder how often I do the same thing.

Our lives today are filled with constant distractions. Phones, work, responsibilities, notifications, and endless to-do lists compete for our attention from the moment we wake up. It's easy to become so busy living life that we unintentionally tune out the voice of the One who is leading us through it.

One statistic shared during the sermon really challenged me: only 1 out of every 6 Christians—about 16%—spend time in God's Word most days of the week. That means the majority of believers are trying to navigate life without regularly hearing from the very Shepherd who promises to guide, restore, and refresh them.

Reading Scripture consistently is a wonderful goal, but simply reading words on a page isn't enough. We need to understand the context of what we're reading so we can faithfully apply God's truth to our own lives. When we slow down and study His Word, we begin to see not only what God said, but why He said it and how it transforms us today.

One saying my husband often says to me has been echoing in my mind:
"What good thing are you willing to give up for the great?"
— Ron Mosca

There are many good things that fill our days, but none of them can replace time spent with the Great Shepherd. Deep relationships don't happen by accident. They are built through consistent time, intentional listening, and growing trust. Our relationship with God is no different.

So today, I want to leave you with two questions to consider.
If you're not spending time in God's Word each day, what good thing could you set aside to make room for the Great?

And if you are in God's Word daily, are you slowing down enough to study its context and allow God to reveal fresh truth, or are you relying on yesterday's understanding instead of seeking what He wants to teach you today?
